John McKenzie was a prominent figure in early Toronto, who came to Canada from Scotland in 1832. He built his house near the Don River on what is now known as O'Connor Drive in 1839. The house remained in the family until 1911 and was used for various purposes over the following decades. In 1988, it was designated a Heritage Property by the City of Toronto—the first property to be so designated in North York—and it has been preserved ever since.
